Where grooves meet galaxies. Formed in the summer of 2023, this funk/jazz fusion powerhouse has been captivating audiences with their original instrumental compositions. With a lineup of musicians boasting wildly diverse musical backgrounds and eclectic listening tastes, the band has crafted a sound that’s as unique as each member’s journey.

Drawing inspiration from the deep-pocket grooves of funk, the improvisational spirit of jazz, and the untamed energy of their collective creativity, Black Hole Boogie Band takes listeners on a sonic adventure through uncharted dimensions. Protostar was recorded mostly live in Pure DSD 256 at Octave Studios in Boulder, Colorado, for Octave Records — PS Audio’s audiophile label (catalog OCT-0063). Engineered by Paul McGowan, produced by Jessica Carson, and mastered by Gus Skinas, with cover art by Emilie Druss.

The Band

Brass forward

Most funk bands tuck a horn player in the back. Black Hole Boogie Band puts two out front — a duo horn section that leads, not decorates. Bandleader Nate McMahon — a former U.S. Marine Corps 2D Marine Division Band saxophonist who has shared stages with Gordon Goodwin and Wayne Bergeron — moves between tenor sax and EWI, the electric wind instrument behind the band’s most otherworldly sounds. Beside him, Braden Barrentine doubles trombone and keys, with a jazz-performance master’s and chairs in the DownBeat-winning JSU Jazz 1 and Chuck Owen’s Jazz Surge.

Behind the horns, the boogie: Dillon DeFelice, the engine room on drums since Protostar; James Berry holding down the low end; and Jordan Lovinger — of Chick Magnet and Phooey — on guitar.
